Inkjet Printer Used to Unlock Mobile Phones

Researchers at Michigan State University recently found a cheaper and faster way to unlock handsets, protected by fingerprint sensors, in less than 15 minutes.

As reported by Quartz, the method starts with a scanned photo of the target user’s fingerprint. This image is scanned, then contrast levels are adjusting as required. The image is then mirrored and printed on a glossy paper that resembles photo stock, using a conductive ink that contains silver.

This new process proposed by researchers Anil Jain and Kai Cao means that fingerprints can be generated more rapidly.

“We want to emphasize the urgent need for anti-spoofing technology because more phones are using fingerprint sensors,” Cao explained.
